History: Before the formation of the first Negro National League in 1920, black baseball consisted primarily of independent clubs who created their own schedules and barnstormed. Giants was a common early name for many Negro league teams because of the popularity of John McGraw's New York Giants, baseball's dominant team in the early 20th Century. The St. Louis Giants later became the Stars, and were a charter member of the NNL.

History: The Butte Colored Giants were trailblazers in that years before Jackie Robinson broke the organized baseball “color barrier” they joined otherwise all-white leagues. In 1922 and ’23, they topped five clubs to win the Butte Independent League championship, and in 1935 they competed as the only black club in the Montana State League, which while not a member of the organized baseball structure, was the highest level of baseball in Montana.
