To celebrate Minor League Baseball's The Nine initiative, Columbus and Indianapolis will be wearing on-field jerseys to honor the Negro League teams from each city. The Columbus Blue Birds were a professional team in the Negro National League in 1931 & 1933 and played at Red Bird Stadium (name of Cooper Stadium from 1932-1954).
The Grand Rapids Owls originally started as an IHL team in the 1970s. They were nomads somewhat, starting off in Columbus, then Dayton, before finding their way to Grand Rapids. They moved mid-season in 1978-79 from Dayton to Grand Rapids, and despite the turbulence, went all the way to the IHL Finals in '79. The team would go out of business after the 1979-80 season but would be re-born many years later as a junior team in the early 00s.
